Another GREAT BUBBLE HOCKEY EVENT by the folks at New Era and "Woj" was held in Buffalo, NY Saturday Feb. 21, 2009.
Al Jennings (MA) staked his claim to recapturing the title of best player in the world by winning the singles title in convincing fashion - a perfect w/l record on the day, 0 losses! Woj (NY) stormed to a strong 2nd place finish but couldn't contend with Al in the finals, and Bill Brooks (NJ) came in an impressive 3rd in a super tough field of 30 players. Congrats to Al, Woj, and Bill, and a big "THANK YOU" to the folks at New Era!!! Check out the Chexxfan "Message Board" for a write-up from Woj and pictures from this great tournament!
Chexxfan Bubble Hockey National Rankings (last edited March 2009)
Chexxfan.com has their own informal "rankings" based on local knowledge, past tournament histories, and Bud Light "Bubble Boys" success. However, lots of weight goes into playing in tournaments, and in the past few years not a lot of bubblers have been playing the tournament scene. With that in mind, here is one man's list of who the "new" forces are to reckon with under the dome: Edited 03/09
# 1 - Jeremy Davis, CT - what can you say about this young gun from CT?!? Dominates nearly every event he enters, has won tournaments in NJ, PA, MO, NY, etc, etc, etc - the hottest bubbler on the planet right now and he shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Anyone want his crown? Come and get it!
# 2 - Al Jennings, MA - at one time the #1 player around, hands down. Still can play with anyone, anywhere, on any dome. He and Jeremy have had epic battles the last few times they have met in tournaments (always in the finals), but Jeremy has gotten the better of him in those events so Al can't lay claim to #1 anymore. With his impressive triumph in Buffalo in '09 Al showed he is ready to be top dawg again - can he re-capture his #1 ranking and reclaim dominance in the dome??? He'll need to knock off Jeremy to do it...
#3 - Kelly Walker - won the 1st National Championships in St. Louis a few years back, and he was a consistent Bubble Boys finalist. Consensus says this guy has a game second to none, including Jeremy. Where is he now?!? Bet he is still at the top of the world under the dome...but he'll have to re-emerge and take on all-comers again if he wants to stop his slide down the rankings and prove he can be #1.
#4 - Tim Leahey, MA - don't know how much outside of Mass. he has played, but he was always a consistent top finisher in the old KONE events against some of the top talent in the North East region of the country. Great singles and doubles player. Super quick with the rods. Clearly one of the top players anywhere and a tough draw in any tournament.
#5 - Mark Wojtkiewicz, NY - another solid all around player, the "Woj" is equally adept in singles and doubles play. Owns a 2003 "Bubble Boys" doubles title and has won some singles events in NY, and was a solid 2nd in the recent '09 event in Buffalo against a loaded field. Always a strong performer in any event he enters. Great defensive player, one of the top anywhere.
#6 - Bill Brooks, NJ - Another terrific singles and doubles talent - superb all around game. He has had mixed tournament success over the years, but he too usually runs into Jeremy at some point and hasn't been able to get over that hurdle. A strong 3rd place finish in Buffalo in Feb. '09 showed the bubble world that a step up is within reach. Multiple time champion of the only active bubble hockey league around (S.J.B.H.L.).
#7 - JG, NJ - Has played in all the big tournaments the last few years. 7 consecutive pool play #1 seeds in the last 7 tournaments, but didn't win any of those titles = Jeremy, Al, and Tim Leahey have always been in the way. And now Jimmy in '09!?! A player who can beat any other player on any day, but needs to step it up a notch if he wants to inch closer to the top. A respectable 4th place finish in Buffalo Feb .09, a disappointing 2nd in his home tourney in NJ in October. Time is running out to climb the rankings...
#8 - Brian Tracey, MO - Maybe the top bubbler in the state of MO. He has performed very well in the National Championships each year they were in St. Louis. Smooth and consistent in every game he plays. Needs to test his game outside the Midwest to see where he stacks up against the other top players - his ranking likley would go up if he did.
#9 - Marc Steele, MI - the self-proclaimed "Bad Boy of the Bubble." His emotional outbursts are legendary, his temper explosive, but there is no denying his talent level under the dome. Another player who's game can match up with anyone, anywhere, anytime - he plays in all the biggest tournaments and fairs quite well, but yet another player who can't seem to climb the hurdle of #1 Jeremy. That won't stop him from trying...
#10 - Jimmy Schwartz, NJ - "thefuture" is NOW! Jimmy cracks the top 10 after an impressive win in the October 2009 Tournament in Burlington, NJ. Was mentored at the hands of Bill Brooks, and he learned well. Took his lumps early under the dome, but put in the time, put in the effort, put in the desire, and look at him now!!! Plays with controlled aggression, a new found precision, and some serious defense. Has vowed to take out all comers and climb the ranks to #1 - who is going to stop him?!?
There are plenty of other great bubblers out there that could crack this list - some haven't played in a while (so we don't know how they'd stack up in '09), some have lots of game but haven't had a break through performance yet in a tournament. Here's just a few waiting on a top 10 slot (alphabetical):
Jason Avery (Toronto, Canada), Craig Cole (MO), Mike Cook (Calgary, Canada), Doug Davis (CT), Kenny Dubois (MA), Michael Hall (NY), Tony Hernandez (UT), Erich Markee (MA), Brian Nelson (PA), Scott Storck (PA), Jim Sullivan (MA), and whole slew of guys in the Buffalo/Toronto area that got game - they showed it in Buffalo in Feb .09!
If there are other names out there, let us know - these rankings change with every event! The more you play, the more "ink" you'll get, so get out and play the game!
Disagree with these rankings? Feel left out? Think you've got game under the dome and deserve some love from the raters?!? Only one way to find out - GET OUT AND PLAY BUBBLE HOCKEY!!! These rankings are subjective and fluid, but if you don't play the game no one knows how good you are, so start spinning the rods and slapping the puck around and come on out to the next tournament and strut your stuff!!!
