Check out www.njbubblehockey.org for the article with all the details from this 16 player tournament that boasted a loaded field of top talent from up and down the East Coast. Will this win push JG to the #1 ranking in the Chexxfan.com Player Rankings? Check back here at www.Chexxfan.com in May '11 as the new rankings are revealed!!! Let the debate begin!!!
JG from New Jersey (and www.njbubblehockey.org) wins the 1st ever ICE Bowl 2010 World Bubble Hockey Championships December 28th in Buffalo, NJ, sponsored by Innovative Concepts in Entertainment (I.C.E.)!!!
JG survived a loaded field of 120 players and the supreme test of #1 player in the world Jeremy Davis to take home the prize check and trophy. Jeremy finished 2nd, with table hockey legend Kenny DuBois from Boston, MA, and Buffalo's own Mark Wojtkiewicz (Woj) tying for 3rd. Kenny and Al Cousineau from Boston, MA won the doubles title on Monday December 27th.
Great job by ICE setting all this up, and hopefully this is just the beginning of a long run of tournaments sponsored by ICE and Molson!!!
Chexxfan Bubble Hockey National Rankings (last edited June 2011)
Chexxfan.com has our own Player Ranking System based on 2 factors: 1) performance in the most recent tournaments (the 3 most recent calendar years), and 2) a player voting pool, with Chexxfan.com members getting to weigh in, subjectively, on where they think players SHOULD be ranked. Points are awarded based on combining the voting results and the tournament results, calculated as follows:
Voting points: Inverse order 10-to-1, with 10 points awarded for each 1st place vote, 9 points for each 2nd place vote, and so on down to 1 point for a 10th place vote. Once the totals are added, an additional 10 point bump is given to the #1 overall vote getter, 9 point bump to the #2 overall vote getter, and so on down to a 1 point bump for the 10th place vote finisher.
Tournament points: tournament points are awarded based on final order of finish in an event, and the total # of players in the event. Here's how points are awarded:
10-19 player events - 20 points for finishing 1st, 10 points for finishing 2nd, and points in inverse order 8-to-1 for 3rd through 10th place finishers;
20-29 player events - 30 points for 1st, 15 for 2nd, 10 for 3rd, inverse order 7-to-1 for 4th-to-10th place finishers;
30-39 player events - 40 points for 1st, 20 for 2nd, 15 for 3rd, 10 for 4th, and inverse order 6-to-1 for 5th-to-10th place;
40-49 player events - 50 points for 1st place, 25 for 2nd, 20 for 3rd, 15 for 4th, 10 for 5th, inverse order 5-to-1 for 6th-to-10th finishers
50+ player events - 100 points for 1st place, 50 for 2nd place, 40 for 3rd place, 30 for 4th place, 20 for 5th place, 15 for 6th, 10 for 7th, 10 for 8th, and 5 each for the 9th and 10th place finishers.
That's our scoring/ranking system, and of course it is subject to change over time based on what the Chexxfan.com members want.
So, without further adieu, as of June 2011, here is the Chexxfan.com Top 20:
#1 - John Gaffney (NJ) - 242 total points. #1 overall vote getter with 76 total voter points, tournament wins in NJ in 2011 (10-19 player field) and the ICE World Championships in Buffalo in 2010 (120 players), three (3) 2nd place finishes 2009 and 2010 (all in NJ, all 10-19 player fields), and a 4th place in Buffalo in 2009 (30-39 player event). Maybe the hottest bubbler on the planet right now...
#2 - Jeremy Davis (CT) - 159 total points. 2nd overall in voter points with 71. A win in NJ in 2009 (10-19 players), and two (2) strong 2nd place finishes in 2010 in NJ (10-19 field) and the ICE Worlds in Buffalo. This cat has been hands-down the #1 bubbler in the world for the last several years, and only a furious recent rush by Gaffney ended his long-time reign at the top. Look for Jeremy's name atop the soon to be released "All Time Champions" rankings coming soon to Chexxfan.com, and don't be surprised to see him regain the top spot in the Top 20 real soon.
#3 - Jimmy Schwartz (NJ) - 148 total points. 67 voter points. 2 tourney wins, in NJ in 2009 and again 2010, a solid 2nd place in NJ in 2011, and a strong 5th place finish at the 2010 ICE Worlds in Buffalo. The self proclaimed "thefuture" of bubble hockey, Jimmy is a rival for anyone on any day, on any table, anywhere. His recent domination of #2 Jeremy is astonishing (7-1 in his last 8 games, can that be correct?!?). Jimmy is looking for the #2 spot soon - he has pronounced he will take it after the next tournament, with his ultimate sights set on #1. Look out present, here comes "thefuture..."
#4 - Mark "the Woj" Wojtkiewicz (NY) - 143 total points. 43 voter points, a great win at New Era in Buffalo in 2010 (30-39 players), a solid 2nd at New Era in 2009 (30-39 players), and a big 3rd place effort at the ICE Worlds in Buffalo in 2010. When this guy comes out and plays, he always does well. He, too, could take over #2 at the next event with a big "W" - look to hear more from the "Woj" in the near future.
The battle for 5th, 6th, and 7th is as intense as the battle for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Look as these #'s:
#5 - Kenny Dubois (MA) - 85 total points. Kenny has only played in one event the past 3 years, but that was the ICE Worlds and he tied with Woj for 3rd place. He also had strong voter support, finishing with 45 voter points to claim the #5 ranking;
#6 - Bill Brooks (NJ) - 82 total points. 32 voter points, a tourney win in NJ in 2010 (10-19 players), a solid 3rd in 2009 at the New Era event in Buffalo, and several other point grabbing finishes at smaller events over the last 3 years;
#7 - Al Jennings (MA) - 80 total points. Al has a huge win at New Era in 2009 and 40 voter points, but he hasn't been seen in the past few years at any other events. If he rejoined the bubble scene there is no doubt this guy would fly up the rankings! Look for the name Al Jennings at or near the top of the soon to be released All Time Champions list...
rounding out the Top 10...
#8 - Doug Davis (CT) - 48 total points. Younger brother of Jeremy, Doug has an impressive 5th place finish at the ICE Worlds in 2010 and a better than decent 4th place finish in NJ in 2010 (10-19 players). Doug also garnered 21 voter points;
#9 - Scott Storck (PA) - 44 total points. 29 voter points, and strong 3rd and 4th place finishes in NJ in 2010 and 2011 enabled Scott to crack the Top 10;
#10 - Jason Avery (Toronto, Canada) - 28 total points. Jason has a strong 2nd place finish at New Era in 2010 and some smaller point grabs at lessor events in NJ in 2009. Despite no vote points, this player earned his way to the Top 10 with great work under the domes!
Rounding out the Top 20, with no tournament wins but some decent showings at tournaments and/or some voting points from the Chexxfan.com faithful...
#11 - Brian Nelson (PA) - 26 total points (7 voter points);
#12 (tie) - Larry Jefford (NJ) and Marc Dublino (NY) - 21 points each, each with 1 voter point and 20 tournament points, Larry's with Top 10 finishes in several smaller events 2009-2011 and Marc with a Top 5 at Worlds in 2010;
#14 - Tom Mangione (NY) - 20 points for Top 5 in Worlds 2010;
#15 (tie) - Dan Petitt (PA) and Dan Giganti (NY), 15 points each. The Dans earned their points in different ways - Petitt had a strong 3rd place finish in NJ in 2009 and another top 6 in NJ in 2011, plus 2 voter points, while Giganti had a great 3rd place finish at the 2010 New Era tournament to earn his 15 all in one shot;
#17 - Justin Kalman (NY) - 10 points, all for a 4th place showing at New Era in 2010;
#18 - Mike Cook (Calgary, Canada) - 8 points. Mike placed a respectible 3rd at a smaller event in NJ in 2009;
#19 (tie) - Marc Krasner (NY), Mike Hall (NY), and Lib Spector (NJ) - 7 points each. Each earned their points with Top 10 finishes at events in NJ the past 3 years.
Disagree with these rankings? Feel left out? Think you've got game under the dome and deserve some love from the raters?!? Only one way to find out - GET OUT AND PLAY BUBBLE HOCKEY!!! These rankings are based mostly on tournament results with some subjective voting thrown in as well, but if you don't play the game no one knows how good you are, so start spinning the rods and slapping the puck around and come on out to the next tournament and strut your stuff!!!
